The Pharmacy First earache service is available for children aged 1 to 17 years. During the consultation, our pharmacist will assess your child’s symptoms and determine if treatment is necessary. If NHS-funded treatment is not suitable, we may offer a private service or refer you to an appropriate healthcare provider.
Acute Otitis Media is a middle ear infection that leads to inflammation, redness, and fluid buildup behind the eardrum. While it can affect individuals of any age, it is most common in children. Symptoms typically develop quickly and may resolve within a few days.
Common symptoms of acute otitis media include:
• Earache or pain inside the ear
• Fever (high temperature)
• Feeling sick or vomiting
• Low energy or fatigue
• Temporary hearing loss due to fluid buildup
• Ear discharge or fluid leaking from the ear
• Feeling pressure or fullness inside the ear
💡 For younger children who may not be able to describe their symptoms, signs may include:
• Pulling or rubbing their ears
• Increased irritability or restlessness
• Loss of balance
• Reduced appetite or difficulty feeding
• Not responding to certain sounds
If symptoms persist or become severe, seek medical attention.
During your consultation, our pharmacist will evaluate the symptoms and, if appropriate, offer treatment through the Pharmacy First Service. Available treatment options include:
💧Ear Drops – To relieve symptoms of acute otitis media.
💊 Antibiotic Tablets, Capsules, or Oral Solution – If a bacterial infection is suspected, antibiotics may be provided based on clinical suitability.
📌If prescribed, the standard NHS prescription charge applies, unless you qualify for free NHS prescriptions.
If the pharmacist determines that treatment through Pharmacy First is not appropriate, they will:
✅ Offer alternative private treatment options
✅ Refer you to a GP or another healthcare provider for further assessment
